No flu! Top tips that will help you stay fighting fit

We’ve got to face the facts: the flu’s going to come knocking on our door again this year, just as it does every year. Few of us are going to make it through the next few months without people around us coughing, sneezing, and spreading their germs.

The single best way to avoid catching the flu is to get vaccinated each year, but there are some other simple steps you can take to help stop the spread of germs.

  1. Wash away the germs. Be sure to wash your hands. If you’re somewhere with no soap and water, use an alcohol-based hand cleanser.
  2. Disinfect, disinfect, disinfect. Use antibacterial spray or wipes on frequently touched surfaces such as door handles and phones, especially when someone is ill.
  3. Avoid close contact. Keep your distance from anyone who is sick. If you’re ill yourself, try and stay at home.
  4. Cover your coughs and sneezes. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and throw any used tissues in the bin.
  5. Leave your eyes, nose and mouth alone. Touching your face after touching something contaminated can allow germs to invade your body.
  6. Eat your greens. Eating a balanced, healthy diet will help you keep your immune system fighting fit. A diet rich in fruit, vegetables, and whole grains will provide your system with the vitamins and minerals it needs.
  7. Get enough sleep. Your immune system is at its best when your body has had time to recharge. Try and get at least seven hours of shut-eye.
  8. Keep moving. At a minimum, a short brisk walk each day will help keep you fit and boost your immune system. If you feel more energetic, try and aim for 30 minutes of exercise three times a week.
  9. Put those layers on. Keeping warm is important for keeping your strength up so you can fight off any infection that comes your way. Keep the heating on in your home and add extra layers to your clothing.
  10. Drink plenty of fluids. Water not only prevents dehydration, it will help flush out any toxin and loosen any mucus. Aim for six to eight glasses a day.
